Carl Friedrich Gauss
Gauss was a German mathematician and physical scientist who lived during the beginning of the 19th century. He had a remarkable influence in many fields of mathematics and science and is ranked as one of history's most influential mathematicians.
He is at the basis of a lot of basic algebra that we use today in our daily life. Gauss found a complete solution to the cyclotomic equation and that this equation can be reduced to solving a series of quadratic equations.
Also Gauss found that every polynomial in one variable that has real coefficients is a product of quadratic and linear factors. Among the most interesting mathematical advance that Gauss proposed is a method to draw statistical inferences for the unknowns in over determined, simultaneous linear equations by minimizing the sum of the squares of the discrepancies. A method he developed with Adrien-Marie Legendre and was modified by a lot of mathematicians depending on the societal needs in computation.
In conclusion, it is because of those simple proposition advanced by Gauss that he is considered as the greatest mathematician since antiquity. And certainly among the most intellectual individual of all time since he contributed significantly in many fields.
